From Riding Officer James Harden’s Notebook
18: Mr. James Harden’s Enquiries.
Bow Street
16th December 1768
My Dear Colonel,
My Felicitations on the Apprehension of Bellweather and Interrogation of Bellweather and the Demon. My Thanks also for the Information supplied. I share your Alarm at the News of four other Individuals now aligned with the Turk and likely supplied with their own Demons. Thank you for the four Names, but none of the Names have previously been brought to my Attention. Rest assured that I will make discreet Enquiries and inform you forthwith of any Information I find. I will keep uppermost in my Mind the Importance of Secrecy in this Matter.
I was heartened too to hear of your Command from the King, a Reflection, I am sure, of the Esteem in which he holds you. I am glad to hear you are happy to meet with Sir John and will pass this on to him when Opportunity presents.
You will hear from me shortly.
Yours, etc.,
James Hardern, Riding Officer.
