23: Deborah Gower

His Grace the Duke of Brunswick

Tower of London,
28th January 1769

My Lord Duke

I am delighted to offer Your Grace most glad Tidings attending our Operation against the Turkish Spymaster in London. We have this Day tracked Deborah Gower to her Lair. It is perhaps Unfortunate that she resisted Arrest so tenaciously that we were unable to make her Prisoner. She died resisting Arrest and we believe her Possessing Spirit to be likewise permanently Put Out of Action.

With the Assistance of the Bow Street Officers, my Companions and I tracked Gower to the Basement of a sordid Flop House in the Smithfields area of London. As we forced an Entry she fled. Two human Adherents tried to delay our Pursuit but were easily set aside. A Monstrous Many-headed Beast that she conjured in her Wake caused us more Difficulty but was likewise overcome. From the Basement we chased her to the Roof where we struggled with her inhuman Strength as she belaboured us with her Magicks and attempted by her Arts literally to float away into the Sky.

I hope my great Appreciation of the Courage and Effectiveness of Riding Officer Harden of Bow Street in this Engagement may be conveyed to his Superiors. Mr. J. Elmhill, a Civilian with some Familiarity, it seems, with Rooftops, also played an important Role by clinging tenaciously to Gower’s Ankles, thus hindering her Escape long enough for Your Loyal Servant to deliver the telling Blow.

Gower and her Possessing Spirit exhibited considerably more Powers and displayed far more Resilience than her three Companions. Upon her Person we discovered Evidence that causes Rao and I to speculate that Deborah Gower was playing a Double Game with the Turk. Her real Masters we suspect were the Anonaki – powerful Ruling Entities banished from the Earth Millennia in the Past. We believed them to be aiding the Turk – as does the Turk – but it now seems likely that their True Objective is to return from Exile and resume their Rule over All. I think that this was the real Purpose of the Gate that Gower was preparing. The Turks are but their Pawns in this Endeavour.

Today has been a Good Day for the Safety of the Realm. We have scotched the Plans of our Enemies for the Present. However, there is still the Matter of an Armed Camp of Turks in the Lands of Dust; and their Puppeteers the Anonaki lurk in the Outer Darkness no doubt plotting more Deviltry. With Your Grace’s Permission, my Counsel would be to continue Vigilance, for I have no doubt they will try again. I await your further orders.

I remain Your Grace’s most obedient Servant.
